Scuba and Snorkeling
Of all the islands in the Gulf, Ko Samui has the most to offer, in terms of things to do, day and night.
Our favorite was circumnavigating the island on a rented 110cc motorbike, an inexpensive way to visit all the nooks and crannies of the island.
We visited all towns, a few beaches, and the Nam Tok Na Muang waterfall in a little over half a day!
Samui has a laid-back atmosphere, and lodging tends to be inexpensive.
The dive season runs between March and October, with visibility generally 10-25 meters, at depths of 15-40 meters.
Although veteran divers prefer Ko Tao to the north, it’s less expensive to get certified in Samui.
Ferries leave Samui to Ko Pha Ngan to the north, and Surat Thani on the mainland.
You can also take a recreational boat, or experience thrilling dives at the beautiful Ang Thong National Marine Park archipelago to the northwest of Samui.
For nightlife, if sitting on the beach at sundown isn’t for you, Hat Chaweng Central has discos, go-go bars, and just about everything else.

Ko Lanta-based dive shops operate from the town of Ban Sala Dan, at the northern end of the island. Best diving is from November to April.
